new spaces /new year: the living room

Ah, the living room.  Once a place of no functional space now brightens my day.  This corner of our room (where our Christmas tree stood) has always baffled me.  Our large painting has always hung here, leaving little options for filling up the space around it: maybe a plant or a chair.  It has always frustrated me because there are so many things that should be in this room.  Like blocks and my girls’ art and my books and random projects we like to pick up and work on without storing in some other room, etc.  This is our family space where we begin our morning and Bobby and I end our night.  Shouldn’t this room work better for us??!!

Two enormous changes.  One, moving my big blue painting and two, bringing a bookcase downstairs.

homemade giving: a journal kit

Caroline is ready for her first journal.  This is quite an exciting milestone since her mother filled easily 15 journals in her lifetime.  I can’t wait for her to discover the fulfillment of writing and then reading and seeing who she’s become over time.

Journaling will also be an incredible writing exercise for my little 6-year-old. I thought a little encouraging would help introduce her to the world of journaling.  Thus the journal kit.

homemade giving: artsy felt sketchbook cover

After last week which was filled with wonderful visitors (friends from college and their little toddlers), this weekend came and granted me some time away at the sewing machine.  Saturday morning, Johanna warded off Caroline from the basement so we could get moving on her present from her sister.  A little something that we knew she would love (a sketchbook) with a little something personal (an original drawing from Johanna of Caroline, stitched onto the cover.)

Johanna and I found the idea when we were skimming through my Bend the Rules with Fabric book by Amy Karol. A pack of Moleskine sketchbooks have been waiting in a covered up box (with other Christmas supplies that have now arrived and are waiting) in the corner of the kitchen.  It is a simple yet fulfilling project.  Check it out…

the hanging mobile

Today is December 1st.  Mary and Joseph can now begin to make their journey (via velcro) to the manager on our hanging advent calendar, something that my girls have been anticipating for a week now.  All of the gingerbread cookie ornaments have been raised to the top half of the tree for the twins’ sake, since most if the ornaments have a few corners missing in them.

And so our month begins with great anticipation towards Christmas. Despite the lists of Christmas-making, holiday-baking, though, there is something new to our home that hangs quietly and untouched down the hall from where I sit…

Here’s a little mixed-media art experiment for the kiddos on this chilly November Friday.  This is just the right project for a blustery day spent indoors.

living in the past

For months, we’ve been preparing for a very special family trip.  For those of you that are mothers to young girls, throwing out the name “Felicity” should give you an idea.  Yes, yes, Colonial Williamsburg.  We’ve read the books, and read countless other colonial library book.  We’ve written a list of colonial projects we wanted to try and one by one, have checked them off.

One morning we attempted to step back into the past yet again by making marbled paper and trying our hand at writing, colonial style.

updating the writing box…

When I get around to it, I like to keep the writing box stocked with inviting notecards for not only my writing girls but for me.

There have been so many moments over the past year that we’ve captured through photography that we, in turn, turn into notecards.  Many Sunday afternoons the girls and I spread out the pile of notecards to find the perfect one to send to a friend.

our fall wreath

Last week on a stroll with the girls we saw everyone’s fall wreaths hanging on their front door.  We came back home and tried to come up with what kind of wreath we could make.  Caroline wanted to glue fall leaves and pumpkins on our wreath.  Johanna had no comment (I’m used to that) and the twins, they don’t really have a say right now.

So we tried coming up with something we could  hot glue to a straw wreath.  I had seen it done before and began raiding the cupboards.  We found one bag of dried lima beans.

I’ve been so anticipating our frolicking through the meadow to gather this fall’s colorful leaves, crisp branches, and dried reeds.

Have I mentioned that my Annabelle and Ainsleigh have all of a sudden turned into little girls?  Two and a half and they are so wanting to do and touch and feel and experiment with all the things they see us big people experimenting with.  And so they shall…

Homemade 3D paint is the perfect creative medium for their little hands and big minds.  You won’t believe it…
