food and the home

I tend to focus on one major category of my role as homemaker at a time.

One week it may be fulfilling sewing projects, another week it may be cleaning and organizational tasks.

Do you know what it has been recently?

Food. Adding excitement and variety to what we eat day in, day out.

hip aromatherapy play dough

My children are becoming increasingly familiar with many essential oil uses in our home.  I can’t get over how much essential oils are changing the way I act, look at healing, cleaning, playing, etc.  I have a few exciting recipes to share at another time of our summer’s bug spray and sun soother using essential oils.  But for right now, here is a basic recipe for some pretty special homemade play dough.  It has changed our usual play dough play.  The added scents have added a new layer of enjoyment and fulfillment.  They are calming, refreshing, and uplifting scents.

10 things to do this summer: popsicles and painting with water

May 31, 20116 Comments

Good morning to you all!  I can’t tell you how wonderful it was having an extra day to the weekend yesterday.  We cleaned out our garage, went to a BBQ (with two very sad, emotional girls–maybe it was the 95 degree weather), and cleaned our house.  Not a lot of time for relaxation, but time to get some needed things in order.

Speaking of ultimately hot weather, we’ve been quite enjoying a way to live with the heat lately.

Popsicles and painting with water.

the sleepy time gal’s 2010

How would I define this past year on this blog?  Real life with my family and creating as we go.  I hope you enjoy this small collection of some of my favorite moments and creations.  As I looked through thousands of photos of last year, I came up with a grand idea.  Fridays will no longer be The Sleepy Time Tip but will now be Projects Revisited.   I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am about that.  There were so many creations and learning experiences while creating this year that I don’t want to get lost as new life and experiences are shared in this space.

sleepy time tip: tapas for children

November 19, 20108 Comments

(Thanks to everyone for voting on Babble’s Top Mom Blogs for the Sleepy Time Gal blog.  They are still taking votes (vote if you haven’t!) and at the moment we’re in 32nd place!  It is so exciting!  Thank you!)

When we’re needing a change for lunch (or when I’ve forgotten to throw the ingredients into the bread machine early in the morning), I announce for all to hear, “Today we’re having a tapas party!”  I always get cheers from wherever the girls are in the house that can cheer.  And then everyone runs into the kitchen to help out.

I’ve always wanted to try chalkboard paint.  I’ve seen it used in a friend’s home and recently in a Pottery Barn catalog over a food covered buffet.

sleepy time tip: tomatoes

Are your counters overflowing with the remnants of summer’s bounty?  Tomatoes are everywhere in my kitchen at this very moment.  Everyday I toss out another one (partially because of the fruit flies enjoying a juicy puncture wound and partially because one less is one less).  Smitten Kitchen, my favorite food blog has some wonderful dishes that use up lots of them!  If you’ve never been there, the food photography is brillant.  You’ll want to return for every meal of the day just to stare.

My hand picked tomato favorites from Smitten Kitchen:

Tomato Sauce with Onion and Butter

Scalloped Tomatoes with Croutons

Classic Cobb Salad

Slow Roasted Tomatoes

It all sounds fine and dandy to do something with them, and fast, but come on, I’d rather just keep slicing them for sandwiches as needed.  That’s my approach to just keep the status quo.

Speaking of things that are fine and dandy, gray and turquoise are back on Monday.  I’ll show you how to make a removable ribbed knit flower that can go from skirt to hair just like *that*.

Happy weekend and Happy Birthday, Mom!

With the excitement of fall in the air and anticipation of all things pumpkin, squash, and simmering for hours, I’ve introduced the girls to recipe hunting.

hatteras bruschetta

We all took turns making dinner each night while at the beach.  We enjoyed shrimp and grits from one family, pasta, pesto and peas from our family, and this beautiful masterpiece my sister-in-law created herself.  I am happy to introduce you to what we affectionately named “Hatteras Bruschetta.”
