…In their development, we can see the extent to which our children feel protected. Surrounded by those they love, they make extraordinary leaps, fantastic moments of revelation and mastery. At our urging or prodding? Never. In flashes they show us who they are…reveling their golden, essential selves. And as parents we live for such moments….

{goodbye.}
I never knew I’d feel such strong protective urges on a trip that I’ve taken many times alone. With my little chick-a-dee along my side, I was extra sensitive to everything new to her world. The smells and sounds and noise of train stations, subway stations and busy streets, the variety of people you stand closely to on public transportation and what comes out of their mouths, the constant stimulation, the constant moving and mindfulness being out in the city with children, being in uncomfortable situations and making the most of it, jumping into the fast pace life of the city, etc., etc…
And there was my Caroline. Taking it all in and doing it so gracefully. Watching her cousins in nervous situations and following their confident lead. Being bold and so much herself in so many new situations. Proving to me over and over again that she is a strong, confident child.
And as parents we live for such moments….

Awesome! I bet Caroline loved having you to herself all weekend. And I’m so glad she loves the city.
How exciting to get away on a trip with Caroline! Looks like there was a lot to see and do. We’re hoping to go to Philly in the Spring, to the Museum of Science… and Aubrey wants to go on a horse-drawn carriage ride!
I can imagine how you must have felt – I can’t believe how protective I feel when we just venture to our neighborhood parks and playgrounds where big kids nearly run over my shy boys. I try not to hover too much and just let them be; giving them a chance to turn into strong confident children like your Caroline.

What a beautiful bunch. Looks like a wonderful time was had by all.
What a lovely trip you had! I’m certain that Caroline enjoyed the time with you all to herself, but I also know she will remember the new experiences she had along the way. My daughter endeavors to spend some one-on-one with each of her girls, and she is always amazed at what she recognizes and is surprised by each time. You’re a great Mommy – just ask you girls!! So glad you had a wonderful trip. Much love and many blessings, Susan
I know those protective urges all to well. When we moved to the city I thought, “what have we done?!” But it has so much good to offer children. What a great idea to do a special one on one trip. You have always, and never cease to inspire me!
we have the same american girl doll – nice to know she travels well! looks like a great trip!!
How wonderful to have a weekend with your daughter! I adored your explanation of how you felt with her in the big city! And I STILL cannot get over how much you resemble your beautiful Momma!! Enjoyed the pic with you, your Sister and the children…
