Last night there was unusual excitement in the kitchen while Bobby was putting the youngest three to bed upstairs. Caroline and Johanna were giddily choosing herbal tea flavors and sharpening pencils before the first meeting of Journal Club officially began.
With something special from the freezer added to the tray of tea, Bobby and the girls situated with pencil and journal, we opened our first meeting…
As a mother I’ve always been fascinated that you can seriously turn anything into something special and exciting. Journaling, creative writing, grammar, and family history, for example, into an absolutely good time when it is made special. Last night we started with a prompt from Caroline’s writing jar: If you could live in any country where would it be? Why? Bobby helped Johanna write out her plans for living in France some day and climbing the Eiffel Tower while Caroline and I, nestled close to each other, wrote about our own dream places to live.
We all wrote, sipped tea, and shared our writings. After our meeting had come to a close, I gathered the journals to keep on the bookshelf for any writers needing them during the week and before reconvening next week. The candle was blown out and girls tucked into bed.
Some weeks we’ll simply write about events and feelings from the week together quietly, sipping tea (or cocoa), of course. Other weeks we’ll try other writing styles to express ourselves. The most exciting part? Seeing everyone just excited to be together at the close of a day to do something as simple as writing.
Writing our treasures together and creating memories.
Happy fall weekend.
