This past month we’ve been clearing out, donating, getting rid of, and trying to organize every part of our house. You see, with seven living under one roof, one crawling baby, four active, creative/exploring girls, and one mother who is happier with order, it naturally happens in the fall when our unschooling/child-led learning becomes more defined.
Our previous magazine corner was in the main living area with a magazine basket overflowing with everyone’s magazines. It had its time and place there for a year or so. As we are reinventing the girls’ art room and changing it to keep up with their needs, desires, and interests, a quiet spot all their own for magazines seemed to be the most needed update. There are spots to sit (one of these days our flopsy bean bags need an update), floating shelves (from IKEA), and a collection of growing magazines.
What are your kids’ favorite magazines?
Our newest favorites are Ask magazine (a science magazine) and Appleseeds magazine (history and culture magazine). And although we love getting monthly subscriptions in the mail, we’ve recently discovered checking magazines out from the library. Caroline loves Food Network magazine and Johanna is enjoying Sky and Telescope magazine. It is like children in a candy store seeing them faec the long magazine wall at the library. There are magazines about every subject!
And so there is new excitement in an old space in our house. Curious readers and the silent act of flipping through pages. I love this updating time of year.
